Huntingdon’s 4 and More Cultural District, under the umbrella of Huntingdon Landmarks, Inc., will once again hold a series of ten Thursday morning walking tours showcasing different aspects of historic downtown Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. Each tour begins at 10:00 AM on Thursday mornings at Merchants Park on the corner of 6th and Penn Streets in downtown Huntingdon. Convenient free parking is available in municipal lots across the street from the park.

The Cultural District Summer walking tour series kicks off Thursday, June 17th with a scavenger hunt of downtown Huntingdon’s architecture. Guide Matt Price of Huntingdon Landmarks, Inc. will lead the tour showcasing the architecture of downtown Huntingdon buildings. On each block during the tour, participants will be encouraged to find the actual elements within the streetscape shown in photographs.

A June 24th tour explores the lives and legacies of some of the remarkable women in Huntingdon’s history and their prominent role in getting American women the right to vote. On June 24, 1919, Pennsylvania voted in favor of the Nineteenth Amendment. By August of 1920, 36 states (including Pennsylvania) approved the Amendment, making women’s suffrage legal all across the country. The tour celebrating the centennial of Pennsylvania’s landmark ratification will be guided by local history buff, April Feagley.

On Thursday, July 1st a tour of public art installations in Huntingdon will be led by John Kearns of the Huntingdon County Arts Council. The tour will showcase the variety of murals and monuments in downtown Huntingdon.

The 4 and More Cultural District Summer walking tour series continues on Thursday, July 8th with a tour of the ecology of the Juniata River watershed. Guide Logan Stenger of the Huntingdon County Conservation District will lead the tour showcasing what lives in and around the waters of the Juniata River basin.

The tour series continues on Thursday, July 15th with a tour exploring the lives and legacies of some of the remarkable women in Huntingdon’s history. The tour will be guided by local history buff, April Feagley.

A tour surrounding the story of Gen. William McAlevy’s role in Huntingdon and American history takes place on July 22nd. McAlevy led troops as a Colonel in the Revolutionary War, after which he was promoted to Brigadier General. An outspoken advocate, the General went on to lead a rebellion in Huntingdon against the ratification of the US Constitution. The tour will be led by Huntingdon Landmarks board member, Matt Price.

Thursday, July 29th tour participants will search for the birds that call downtown Huntingdon their home. Guide Crystal McNeal, a local birding enthusiast, will introduce the hows of bird watching, help participants locate bird habitats and identify species seen along the way.

Thursday, August 5th a tour exploring the lives of Huntingdon native Civil War Generals Horace Porter and David McMurtrie Gregg will be led by guide Fred Lang, a board member of the Huntingdon County Historical Society.

The tour series continues on Thursday, August 12th with a tour of Huntingdon’s downtown gardens. Guide Celina Seftas, Manager of the Huntingdon County Conservation District will lead the tour showcasing the variety of plantings in downtown Huntingdon.

The 4 and More Cultural District Summer walking tour series concludes on Thursday, August 12th, with a tour of Huntingdon’s history as a transportation hub. Guide Kelley Kroecker will lead the tour showcasing the history of the trolley company that once navigated Huntingdon’s streets.

All of the walking tours are free and open to the public. However, donations are willingly accepted. The tours happen rain or shine.

Guide April Feagley of Juniata College will lead the tour showcasing the urban forestry initiatives that have led Huntingdon to be recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA for more than 20 consecutive years.

The series continues on Thursday, August 8th with a wellness walk through downtown Huntingdon. Guides and practitioners from the Huntingdon Health and Wellness Association will lead the tour showcasing ways to enhance your physical, mental and emotional well-being.

Art Walk Huntingdon April 20th Lineup

New mascot for Art Walk Huntingdon to be unveiled, area artists celebrating spring, National Poetry Month, and more to be featured during monthly celebration of Huntingdon’s arts scene.

Art Walk Huntingdon will take place on the third Thursday of every month with the next one on April 20, 2017 during the hours of 5:00-8:00 PM.

The April 20th Art Walk includes:
• Juniata College Museum of Art will have an interactive comic strip creation activity.
• Juniata College Mud Junkies Ceramics Club will hold a wood kiln firing demonstration in the field at the top of Mifflin Street beyond 18th Street.
• Standing Stone Coffee Co. will feature the photography of Charles Bartholomew and the Huntingdon Interact Club will be on hand with crafts for kids.
• Sweethearts Confectionery is hosting a “Meet Artie Walker” Art Walk Huntingdon mascot unveiling party.
• Parks Design and Ink will be doing Spin Art make and take t-shirts $.
• Stone Town Café, Wine Bar and Gallery invites guests to paint mini flower pots and plant little flowers.
• American Legion Post 24 will help participants plant peas and create pinecone bird feeders, and will serve up Potato Corn soup for a donation.
• Studio One Fifteen invites participation in an Earth Day project by artist Kelly Kozora.
• Huntingdon County Arts Council’s Art Space is having poetry readings in honor of National Poetry Month. 5-7pm for kids, and 7-8pm for adults. Art on display is from the Council’s “Spring Thaw” showcase of student art from schools in Huntingdon County.

Introducing Art Walk Huntingdon

Huntingdon Landmarks, Inc. is launching a Third Thursday promotion in downtown Huntingdon to promote the borough’s arts scene. Art Walk Huntingdon will take place on the third Thursday of every month beginning on September 15, 2016 during the hours of 5:00-8:00 PM.

Landmarks chairman Matt Price explains, “Art Walk Huntingdon will really focus on getting the community into arts related businesses and organizations throughout the borough, and will tie in nicely with the Farmers Market and other Thursday events during the summer months in Huntingdon.”

The goal of Art Walk Huntingdon is to get people moving about and experiencing the arts throughout the year, the walking part is optional. Huntingdon County Arts Council executive director John Kearns adds, “Huntingdon is experiencing a boom in arts-related businesses and organizations, with several new galleries and performance companies starting in the past five years.”

The third Thursday events will also provide an opportunity for the local Huntingdon community to connect with Juniata College and visitors to the area. Kathryn Blake of the Juniata College Museum of Art sees great potential with this connection, saying, “The museum is thrilled to participate in Art Walk Huntingdon! We are extending our Thursday hours and look forward to showing the museum’s collection as well as student and faculty work to the community.”

“This is a great fit for Huntingdon Landmarks through the 4 and More Cultural District partnership,” adds Price. “This is exactly the type of event that will help Landmarks’ mission of promoting the economic viability of historic landmarks in Huntingdon.”

Cultural District Walking Tours of Huntingdon

Huntingdon Landmarks, Inc. recently announced the remaining schedule of 2015

The 4 and More Cultural District Partnership operates under the umbrella of Huntingdon Landmarks, Inc. The partners host monthly lunch and learn lectures September-May, and weekly Wednesday morning walking tours during the summer.

free walking tours of downtown Huntingdon’s 4 and More Cultural District. All tours begin at 10am on Wednesdays at Merchant’s Park on the corner of 6th and Penn Streets in downtown Huntingdon and last approximately 60 minutes. The tours are provided by volunteer guides free of charge, but free-will offerings are accepted to benefit local organizations.

The tour for Wednesday, July 8th will focus on the growing pastime of geocaching. The tour will be guided by Dr. Kathleen Jones of Huntingdon, and hand-held GPS units will be available for use courtesy of the Friends of Raystown Lake for those not having their own or a GPS-enabled smart phone.

On Wednesday, July 15th, Huntingdon resident, Ilona Ballreich will guide a tour of public art in the downtown. The tour will showcase murals and monuments dedicated to Huntingdon’s history and scenery.

Dr .Philip Dunwoody of Huntingdon will guide participants through the practice of Tai Chi on Wednesday, July 22nd. Tai Chi is a martial art form touted for its health benefits that according to some sources may date back to 12th century China.

Participants will celebrate Huntingdon’s designation as a Tree City, USA by the Arbor Day Foundation with a tour of urban forestry on Wednesday, July 29th. Local reporter and trained forester, April Feagley will guide the tour focusing on tree identification and maintenance.

Huntingdon’s history of stained glass artistry will be featured in the tour on August 5th. Local resident and officer in the Huntingdon County Arts Council, Julie Price will guide the tour of downtown buildings with stained glass windows. A few Huntingdon residents have become well-known for stained glass art, including Ann Dorris Chisolm who produced an award winning piece for the 1883 World’s Fair, which will be featured on the tour.

The walking tour season wraps up on Wednesday, August 12th with a guided tour of Huntingdon’s churches. The tour will be led by Huntingdon County Historical Society executive director, Kelley Kroecker, and will showcase the history and architecture of some of downtown Huntingdon’s church buildings.
