Huntingdon Landmarks Acquires Historic Building

State grant provides funds for acquisition and other revitalization projects

HUNTINGDON, PA, AUGUST 23, 2021: Huntingdon Landmarks, Inc. is pleased to announce the acquisition of the historic building located at 400 Penn Street in downtown Huntingdon’s National Register Historic District. The three story building is located on the highly visible corner of 4th and Penn Streets, and has a street-level retail and cafe space as well as four residential apartment units on the upper floors.

The building was purchased from prior owners Louis “Skip” and Billie Kenawell using funds provided through a grant to Huntingdon Landmarks from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. Additional funds from the same grant will go toward renovations to the property, marketing downtown Huntingdon as a travel destination and completing the restoration of Huntingdon’s town clock located in the steeple of the Presbyterian Church on 5th and Mifflin Streets.

Board president, Kathy Jones says, “Huntingdon Landmarks is excited to take this step toward the revitalization of our beautiful downtown area. This marks the first major initiative from the community visioning process we completed just as the COVID pandemic began last year.”

Founding board member, Matt Price adds, “the acquisition of a historic building downtown has been a goal of Landmarks since its founding in 2009. We thank Sen. Jake Corman and DCED for helping us to finally achieve that goal.”

Senator Corman shared “The renovations made possible by this grant will ensure the condition of these properties matches the spirit of the Huntingdon community. It was a pleasure working with Huntingdon Landmarks and community leaders to help make this project a reality.”

The first steps in the renovation will be to update two vacant apartments and do maintenance to the roof. Exterior painting and renovations to the storefront are expected to start in 2022.

Huntingdon’s 4 and More Cultural District, under the umbrella of Huntingdon Landmarks, Inc., will once again hold a series of ten Thursday morning walking tours showcasing different aspects of historic downtown Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. Each tour begins at 10:00 AM on Thursday mornings at Merchants Park on the corner of 6th and Penn Streets in downtown Huntingdon. The Cultural District Summer walking tour series kicks off Thursday, June 17th with a scavenger hunt of downtown Huntingdon’s architecture. Guide Matt Price of Huntingdon Landmarks, Inc. will lead the tour showcasing the architecture of downtown Huntingdon buildings. On each block during the tour, participants will be encouraged to find the actual elements within the streetscape shown in photographs.

A June 24th tour explores the lives and legacies of some of the remarkable women in Huntingdon’s history and their prominent role in getting American women the right to vote. On June 24, 1919, Pennsylvania voted in favor of the Nineteenth Amendment. By August of 1920, 36 states (including Pennsylvania) approved the Amendment, making women’s suffrage legal all across the country. The tour celebrating the centennial of Pennsylvania’s landmark ratification will be guided by local history buff, April Feagley.

On Thursday, July 1st a tour of public art installations in Huntingdon will be led by John Kearns of the Huntingdon County Arts Council. The tour will showcase the variety of murals and monuments in downtown Huntingdon.

The 4 and More Cultural District Summer walking tour series continues on Thursday, July 8th with a tour of the ecology of the Juniata River watershed. Guide Logan Stenger of the Huntingdon County Conservation District will lead the tour showcasing what lives in and around the waters of the Juniata River basin.

The tour series continues on Thursday, July 15th with a tour exploring the lives and legacies of some of the remarkable women in Huntingdon’s history. The tour will be guided by local history buff, April Feagley.

A tour surrounding the story of Gen. William McAlevy’s role in Huntingdon and American history takes place on July 22nd. McAlevy led troops as a Colonel in the Revolutionary War, after which he was promoted to Brigadier General. An outspoken advocate, the General went on to lead a rebellion in Huntingdon against the ratification of the US Constitution. The tour will be led by Huntingdon Landmarks board member, Matt Price.

Thursday, July 29th tour participants will search for the birds that call downtown Huntingdon their home. Guide Crystal McNeal, a local birding enthusiast, will introduce the hows of bird watching, help participants locate bird habitats and identify species seen along the way.

Thursday, August 5th a tour exploring the lives of Huntingdon native Civil War Generals Horace Porter and David McMurtrie Gregg will be led by guide Fred Lang, a board member of the Huntingdon County Historical Society.

The tour series continues on Thursday, August 12th with a tour of Huntingdon’s downtown gardens. Guide Celina Seftas, Manager of the Huntingdon County Conservation District will lead the tour showcasing the variety of plantings in downtown Huntingdon.

The 4 and More Cultural District Summer walking tour series concludes on Thursday, August 12th, with a tour of Huntingdon’s history as a transportation hub. Guide Kelley Kroecker will lead the tour showcasing the history of the trolley company that once navigated Huntingdon’s streets.

All of the walking tours are free and open to the public. However, donations are willingly accepted. The tours happen rain or shine.

Art Walk Huntingdon Returns October 15, 2020

We are proud to announce after a 7 month hiatus that Art Walk Huntingdon is back for the month of October, 2020!

We’ve restructured a bit and Art Walk will be concentrated on 2 venues in uptown Huntingdon with careful physical distancing protocols.

Standing Stone Coffee Company will be hosting live music in its courtyard along with an artist marketplace. The Huntingdon County Arts Council will be on-hand giving free kid’s Art Walk t-shirts with a station to decorate them with fabric paint and markers. The t-shirts are provided by Huntingdon Landmarks, Inc. through funds raised by previous Art Walks.

The Juniata College Museum of Art is hosting two outdoor activities. The MudJunkies Ceramics Club invites attendees to purchase and glaze greenware which will be fired on-site in a Raku Kiln. There will also be a blacksmithing demonstration as well as other activities.

We encourage all participants to wear masks and/or face shields during the event, and they are absolutely required when entering the buildings.

Art Walk Huntingdon

Create your own Wind Chime Thursday, June 20, 5 to 8 pm Walk in to the Art Space on Thursday, June 20, as the Huntingdon County Arts Council participates in Art Walk Huntingdon with Create your own Wind Chime. Using various households items, create the perfect wind chime for your garden or porch. Summer Walking Tour Schedule 2019

Huntingdon’s 4 and More Cultural District under the umbrella of Huntingdon Landmarks, Inc. will once again hold a series of nine Thursday morning walking tours showcasing different aspects of historic downtown Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. Guide April Feagley of Juniata College will lead the tour showcasing the urban forestry initiatives that have led Huntingdon to be recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA for more than 20 consecutive years.

The 4 and More Cultural District Summer walking tour series continues on Thursday, July 11th with a tour of the ecology of the Juniata River watershed. Thursday, August 1st, brings a tour of the contributions of volunteers to past and present downtown Huntingdon. Guide Matt Price of Huntingdon Landmarks will lead the tour showcasing Eagle Scout projects, planters, gardens and more that were and are the brainchildren of volunteers of all ages.

The series continues on Thursday, August 8th with a wellness walk through downtown Huntingdon. Guides and practitioners from the Huntingdon Health and Wellness Association will lead the tour showcasing ways to enhance your physical, mental and emotional well-being.

Art Walk Huntingdon will take place on the third Thursday of every month with the next one on February 21, 2019 during the hours of 5:00-8:00 PM. This month’s Art Walk features interactive art experiences, exhibitions of a historical master artist as well as student art and a celebration of Black History Month.

• American Legion Post 24 invites guests to make colorful Suncatchers with tissue paper & laminating sheets. Hot dogs and homemade potato soup will be available for donation.
• Payne Church Fellowship Hall (719 Moore Street): The Huntingdon County Juneteenth Celebration Committee will showcase the African American history of Huntingdon in recognition of African American History Month. There will be a display of African American quilts, African clothing and art work, books, pictures and other items, including a display of a painting by John Chaplin, a native of Huntingdon from the 19th century. John is an ancestor of the Harris family which holds its annual family reunion in Huntingdon over the Labor Day weekend (This will be the 80th year for the reunion).

The October 18th Art Walk includes:
Huntingdon Area High School Auditorium: The Art Department at Huntingdon Area School District is proud to host a collaborative, cultural event for Huntingdon’s October Art Walk! Along with our Related Arts Spanish Educators, we welcome the community to explore Mexican heritage and the holiday known as Dia de los Muertos. We will provide historical and cultural information, decorations, music, authentic food to sample (while supplies last!), and several art activities for the community to enjoy. Art specific activities include, creating festive chalk drawings inspired by the holiday. Participants may also create a paper marigold to keep, or add to our Ofrenda, the area of remembrance. Finally, we plan to have sugar skull candy available for decorating.

Juniata College Beeghly Library – Attendees will have the opportunity to read scary short stories and tales of terror and then write their own! Special guest: author Nicholas Galante will be on-hand ready to talk about his favorite stories or offer suggestions on writing.

Juniata College Museum of Art – in conjunction with the UK’s Big Draw month-long drawing event, the theme is “Play” – via drawing.

MudJunkies Ceramics Club at Juniata College Ceramics Studio: Fall themed Raku DIY glazing, then Mudjunkies will fire in Raku Kiln for you to pick up about 45 minutes later!
