State grant provides funds for acquisition and other revitalization projects
HUNTINGDON, PA, AUGUST 23, 2021: Huntingdon Landmarks, Inc. is pleased to announce the acquisition of the historic building located at 400 Penn Street in downtown Huntingdon’s National Register Historic District. The three story building is located on the highly visible corner of 4th and Penn Streets, and has a street-level retail and cafe space as well as four residential apartment units on the upper floors.
The building was purchased from prior owners Louis “Skip” and Billie Kenawell using funds provided through a grant to Huntingdon Landmarks from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. Additional funds from the same grant will go toward renovations to the property, marketing downtown Huntingdon as a travel destination and completing the restoration of Huntingdon’s town clock located in the steeple of the Presbyterian Church on 5th and Mifflin Streets.
Board president, Kathy Jones says, “Huntingdon Landmarks is excited to take this step toward the revitalization of our beautiful downtown area. This marks the first major initiative from the community visioning process we completed just as the COVID pandemic began last year.”
Founding board member, Matt Price adds, “the acquisition of a historic building downtown has been a goal of Landmarks since its founding in 2009. We thank Sen. Jake Corman and DCED for helping us to finally achieve that goal.”
Senator Corman shared “The renovations made possible by this grant will ensure the condition of these properties matches the spirit of the Huntingdon community. It was a pleasure working with Huntingdon Landmarks and community leaders to help make this project a reality.”
The first steps in the renovation will be to update two vacant apartments and do maintenance to the roof. Exterior painting and renovations to the storefront are expected to start in 2022.
